I had a relatively new battery in a car that died. The battery (and car) sat for a year, got sulfated and wouldn’t charge. I used a bottle of INOX Battery Conditioner which you can get at many auto shops for about $10. Charged up the battery and it’s still good. As I understand it, the INOX breaks down the sulfides and they go back into solution.

If the battery you are inspecting fails any of those tests, you will have to disassemble the battery down to the cell groups so that you can find out which cell group’s voltage is out of spec. The battery should read at least 12 volts. If your reading shows 10 to 12 volts instead, you may be able to restore the normal function through reconditioning. However, there’s no reason to try it once the battery reaches below 10 volts if you recharged it quite recently. At this point, you are better off getting a replacement.
